Just thought I’d send a quick post about this subject… in short don’t approve comments without reading each one thoroughly. Even though comments can give you more content and make you look popular, they can also adversely affect your search engine rankings among other things.
Check an example of another one we just received:
“That is my second see to this weblog. We are starting a whole new initiative while in the same exact category as this blog. Your blog offered us with vital information to do the trick on. You might have achieved a marvellous position.”
The dead giveaways:
- It doesn’t say sh*t
- It’s too nice
- Poor spelling
- Poor grammar
Why would a spammer send nice comments?
They just want the backlinks (a link back their site) from sites with decent pagerank to gain better rakings/standings on Google… most likely to make more $$ with advertising. Yep, it’s that simple.
Why should you care?
Having links to sites that may be marked as spam sites or blacklisted can look bad in Google’s eyes… and we want to always remain in Google’s good graces, yes? ;^ )
What to do?
- Don’t approve the comment
- Mark it as spam (your blogging software should just have a quick link to do this)
- That’s it!
If you want to have your spam removed automatically, just install Akismet (FREE – depending on the type of site you run) and let it manage the spam for you. (it’s truly amazing… nuking about 99.9% of the spam automatically)

Thanks for the quick post. This is a really old post, and I am not sure if you still check it, but I have been having a lot of these nice spammers on my site. Thought it was a little fishy, but approved anyway until I saw this. My question is, as an alternative, couldn’t you just delete any links or references to their site instead of marking as spam and deleting? I have installed Captcha now so I hope to have less to worry about, but now I have to go and either delete the links, or mark many of my comments as spam.

Great question… A few things to consider:
1) Unless you’re a developer, how exactly would you remove the links? These are automatically published when a comment is approved (and embedded within WP core code)
2) Why would you want garbage comments on your site? (even without the links)
3) If you want to have your spam removed automatically, just install Akismet (FREE – depending on the type of site you run) and let it manage the spam for you. (it’s truly amazing… nuking about 99.9% of the spam automatically)

PS – marking spam comments as spam also helps the world by adding to the community of others doing it as well. =)
Its help me a lot.. But is any method to get much backlinks 4 our site and if some one spam wil it good to auto delet the comments 4 some dayz
Not sure if I understand… but if you’re asking how to auto-delete the spam, as I mentioned within the post, just install Akismet and purchase the license for the API.

Thanks for the response. As for the links automatically posting, I thought that you could just delete the reference to their site. By way of example, your comment form asks me for my email and my website. If you thought my comment was junk but wanted to approve anyway, before approving you could delete the website and email then approve. I am pretty new at this, so I guess what you are saying is that there are still links in some form that are posted. Oh well.
As for not wanting junk comments on my site, I completely understand that. The comments have slowed down since I installed captcha anyway. Guess a little discouraging to find out that you are not getting as much traffic as you thought :). Thanks again for the post and the reply.
